Mission + Goals

The 2019 Wilberforce Symposium is a half-day gathering of students, alumni and community members that demonstrates the breadth of the Christian understanding of the world and the broad, life-shaping, society-impacting truth of the gospel. This spring, excellent speakers from the UNC alumni network and beyond will speak on the future of the faith in America amidst opportunities for conversation and relationship-building.

This event is a follow-up to the North Carolina Study Center’s 2018 Wilberforce Conference. Read about the 2018 Conference theme below.

Wisdom for the Road Ahead

The 2018 Wilberforce Conference theme was Wisdom for the Road Ahead

Wisdom is not less than knowledge, but it is certainly more. It implies lived experience, time-tested truth and engagement with the past in discerning how we're called to live and act today and tomorrow.  Wisdom is universal: it offers itself to every sphere of our lives and every facet of our society.

Last year's Wilberforce Conference explored both what it means to be a wise person and how wisdom tangibly applies to different vocational fields.

Because we believe that wisdom is both under-appreciated and of timeless, inestimable value.

While knowledge is widely hungered after today as the key to success and power, wisdom, which is more difficult to quantify, is largely ignored.  The neglect of wisdom is a tragedy, as it involves the essential art of reasoning, deliberating and then choosing how to act well.

One who is wise may not immediately know the answer to every question, but she knows the principles by which she can arrive at the answer. Wisdom is an essential trait, particularly for college students who are seeking to discover and chart the course of their lives and careers.

In the spirit of William Wilberforce, last year's Conference explored what it means to live wisely in today's world and how wisdom applies to different vocational fields.

Proverbs, the so-called 'book of wisdom,' describes boldly the value of wisdom:

"Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth... The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight."

Our hope for all Wilberforce events is that, through setting aside time for thoughtful discussion and relationship-building, all would 'get wisdom' and be more equipped for the road ahead.
